How to take Advantage of Your Free Week at Black Wolf

Your Free Week of Classes at Black Wolf CrossFit gives you seven consecutive days to try out as many classes as you are able with no obligation to join. No billing information is required. You’ll create your free account, sign the waiver and be good to go.

The reason for the 7 days instead of the normal 1 free session or, God forbid, pay before you start model, is because it is important to us that you know you want to be here.

That is also why we do not use contracts and we do not have weird cancellation policies (60 day notice to cancel just mens you are in a 3 month contract. Dumb).

Everything is based on making sure you are happy being a part of this place. And if at any point that changes, you should not feel obligated to stay.

And during your Free Week, all of the classes on the schedule are available to you.

Now that you have the details, how do you make sure you get the most out of your Free Week, especially if you have not been working out recently.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

Black Wolf CrossFit

508 W Crosstimbers St

Houston, Tx  77018

Your GPS will be correct but you have to stay sharp to find the final turn as it is not well marked and it is on a 30 foot stretch of oneway road so there’s no solution accept making a full loop.

1) Stay right at the fork where Crosstimbers goes slightly left and a single lane cuts right (which would take you to the entrance to Mister Carwash)

2) Immediately at the fork there is a driveway to the right. That’s us. After the old apartments and before the townhomes.

3) Go down the alleyway and you’ll see us straight ahead.

Most importantly. Do not panic. Yes, arriving a few minutes early is ideal, but we do not shame people for arriving a few minutes late. We will take care of you whenever you finally get here.

5-10 MINUTES EARLY

You do not need to show up super early, especially if you have already signed the waiver online. However, showing up 5-10 minutes before, especially on day 1 will help you feel more comfortable when class starts. You’ll get to meet your coach, see how the building is laid out, and you will not feel rushed as we get going the minute the hour starts.

NOTE: If you have not already signed the waiver, no worries, but do show up 10 minutes early to give yourself time to sign and settle in.

2 DAYS IN A ROW

First, plan on coming two days in a row to start. The number one mistake people make is planning on coming every other day. And that makes sense in our minds because surely a day off between workouts is good.

Unfortunately, if you have not been working out recently, this plan often means we will see you on day 1 and then day 4 or 5 at the earliest.

Why?

Because of the potential for soreness. Look, working out is tough. We make it fun and we make sure you do not take on anything you are not prepared to handle well. But your muscles are going to be used in ways they have not been used in a long time, if ever. So, no matter what, you are going to be a little sore.

But when you rest the day after your first workout, your muscles actually become more sore on day 3. So even though day 2 you were sore but can still move around well, day 3 your muscles often make it difficult to move your body the way you want to in a workout.

If you come two days in a row, you not only guarantee you get two workouts in quickly, but you also help to flush the soreness out because moving your body through full ranges of motion allows blood to get through the muscles that were used the day before.

2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on works well. So does 3 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on. But it all starts with getting in two days in a row.

NOTE: If you’ve been working out then this is a little less important both because you are less likely to get as sore as someone who is new to these movements but also because you are familiar with being sore so it comes as less of a shock. We still like multiple days in a row and the original CrossFit prescription was 3 days on, 1 day off.

COMMUNICATE

You are not in boot camp and we are not drill instructors.

If you have doubts or concerns or questions. Or you just want confirmation that you are doing it right, just ask. We are pretty good at knowing you have a questions before you even realize it so do not be surprised if we magically appear and say “What’s up?” But just in case we have not popped why yet, just give us a look and we will walk right over to help out.

Do not workout through pain. Do not feel like you have to find alternatives on your own. Let us know what you are dealing with and we will set you up to have the best possible experience.

FOLLOW THE RULES

Now I have your attention. But the good news is, we only have 2 rules:

  1. 1) Be willing to try – We will never ask you to do anything that you are not prepared to do. And we will remind you that you can rest, drink water, take a break whenever you need to. Nobody is going to yell at you. But, in return, you must be coachable (willing to learn) and you must be willing to give it your best shot. You’ll surprise yourself with how awesome you are.
  2. 2) Do not have a negative impact on anyone around you – It is not realistic to expect that every time you walk into this place you are having the best day ever. Bad days happen and that stress follows us of course. But we have the choice on whether we allow it to bleed into the lives of the people around us.
  3. Do not be fake happy. But on those bad days just be neutral and let the energy of others lift you up. And on the days where you are the one having a great day, your energy and your vibes will lift others up. That’s the magic of the group format.
  4. We are community first. So that means that any action that is against the best interest of the community (a bad attitude, gossiping, not putting equipment away, leaving early or arriving late frequently) is not acceptable.
  5. Say hi to people when you can, tell people they did great before you leave. And you’ll receive so much praise and support it will knock your socks off.

HAVE FUN

It’s a new experience. Even if you’ve done workouts like this before, it’s a new place with new people. Find something to enjoy. The world of Instagram motivation is misleading. Workout because you know that you are supposed to is not going to set you up to be consistent. And without consistency, there is not a workout in the world that will make a difference.

Come in, start slow and let the momentum build. Meet as many people as you can. Enjoy the coaches as they make you smile while making you work hard. And celebrate the fact that you are a badass just for showing up.

And once you get through your Free Week, let me know if there’s anything I can add to this to help the next person. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
