Over the 10 years (this December) we have been open, I have not consistently worked out since 2015 or so. Im very fortunate that this job keeps me active, and that I have been able to workout sporadically over the years thanks to y’all but at some point shame has only served
But I really built a giant mountain of bullshit that stood between me and just letting myself get back into the rhythm. I own a gym and couldn’t make myself workout. That’s embarrassing. I help people get moving, and do things they didn’t realize they could do. And I couldn’t get myself to push myself through a workout to save my life.
That is why it is so important to me that this place prioritizes helping people get started or get back into it. Because I know it can be so hard even though it seems so simple.
It’s also why I tell you that you are awesome even when you just do a proper air squat. Because you choosing to move well is already a giant step in the right direction compared to so many other people.
I have let myself get too out of shape.
People are going to be shocked at how far I’ve let myself go.
It is going to hurt so bad getting back into it.
I can’t event do the simplest thing like run a mile or two without being really uncomfortable or in pain.
There is so much other more urgent stuff I need to do instead of working out.
I’ll just do it on my own before I do it in front of people.
Im fine the way I am.
What is even the point?
I am embarrassed that I have struggled so much with this. And that shame has not helped get me on track. It’s only served to make the fake mountain higher.
I hate that when I ran I couldn’t go more than 2 miles before my legs needed to stop.
I hate that I haven’t enjoyed this amazing community as a member myself. That I haven’t used the energy y’all bring for each other for myself.
I hated being able to get through one round of a workout before needing to take breaks after every single set before I could stand up straight to move on.
And most frustratingly, I hate that I have not used y’all and all of the energy you bring to each class. Just get in, turn your brain off, and let the class get you through it.
So if you have ever felt anything similar, know that you are not alone. And if you can’t help but feel alone, come hang out. I cannot express to you how much I mean that you do not have to do anything you do not feel prepared to do.
We start every single day from wherever you find yourself. And we build from there. And on the next day, sometimes we are another step forward, sometimes we are in the same place, and sometimes (we feel) we are a step back. But no matter what, we start wherever you find yourself. And that’s how you stay moving toward your goal.
